LibriVox Needs Your Help!

February 25, 2010

UPDATE: March 2010. I am delighted to report that LibriVox reached its fund-raising goal within a fortnight and the appeal is now closed. Thank you all for your support! Now we can get on with recording even more audiobooks for you. 🙂

For four-and-a-half years, LibriVox volunteers have been making audiobooks for the world to enjoy, and giving them away for free. We’ve made thousands of free audiobooks that have been downloaded by millions of people; our site gets 400,000 visitors every month. To date, all our costs have been borne by a few individuals, with some generous donations from partners. However, these costs have become too big.

Our fundraising goal is $20,000. After we reach it, we’ll shut down our fundraising campaign. And we hope we can make it another 4.5 years without having to bother you again!

Some people don’t understand why the hosting for is so expensive, as our finished audio files are hosted by the Internet Archive. What they don’t realise is that all the working audio files, which are sometimes uploaded and downloaded many times for editing, proof-listening etc., are all hosted on our own server. And the bandwidth used is pricey.

Thank you!
